Jinux is a custom distribution of the Linux operating system. It was built completely from scratch for the specific purpose of creating specialized servers. A commercial distribution of Linux such as Red Hat will install approximately 500 software packages for a basic server. Most of these packages are unnecessary or extraneous in an environment like BitRelay, and therefore create maintenance problems and pose security risks. Jinux, on the other hand, uses a minimalistic configuration to provide maximum security while allowing for easy upgrades. The packages installed on BitRelay's servers are only those required for the operation of the web, e-mail, and database servers-- along with their associated support software. The current server configurations only require around 100 packages. BitRelay performs periodic audits to ensure the servers are using the latest versions of the software, incorporating performance enhancements and security patches. The Jinux package management system allows fast and simple upgrades. |
